Data Viewing Officer

Counter Terrorism Policing Stand: Platinum Sponsor

AIM OF JOB

To assist in the investigation of terrorism and crime related offences. To view and assess data in various forms, including computer, multi-media and audio and update databases as necessary. To interpret searching and viewing parameters as set in conjunction with the SIO.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To view seized articles including CCTV / DVD, video’s, CD, floppy disc’s and any other audio or visual imagery. Preparing viewing logs and completing recording logs as required by Unit policy and procedure.
  • Gather and develop intelligence in line with the National Intelligence Model.  Gather intelligence in respect of criminal behaviour and extremist, subversive and terrorist activities / offences.
  • Participate in the gathering of evidence and intelligence during investigations. Use the computerised case management system for the storage of data relating to that case.
  • Maintain files and logs, either electronic and/or manual, for each case and provide statements where required in relation to current and historical investigations.
  • To assess viewed data and highlight any potential evidential opportunities. Data assessed as not relevant could have an adverse outcome on any further proceedings as vital evidence may have been incorrectly discarded.
  • To view and categorise downloaded data forwarded from witnesses in relation to crowd source imagery. Assess and decide its relevance to ensure all potential evidence is recorded for further investigation.
  • At time of Executive Action, provide assistance and mentoring to officers who may be deployed to assist with viewing role.
  • To deputise for the Data Viewing Team Supervisor in times of annual leave etc. and attend briefings and other meetings on their behalf.
  • To update the software systems in use, especially RETINA, and allow access to relevant personnel.
  • Produce reports at the end of an Operation and submit all relevant documents for the Evidence Review process.
  • To assist the SIO and Evidence Review Manager in viewing, recording and assessing material that may be forwarded, by the public, in response to media appeals after a major incident.
  • Liaise and work with other agencies such as Security Services, translators and foreign law enforcement agencies.
  • To be responsible for the secure filing and retrieving of paper based documentation during any incidents and/or day to day work.
  • Deal with telephone enquiries, offering advice on the services provided by the unit.
  • Have a detailed knowledge of the recovery, continuity and presentation of evidence from audio and media products within complex covert and overt operations.
  • Provide operational briefings to police officers and police staff at all levels to maximise a two-way flow of information and intelligence.
  • To produce accurate summaries in relation to relevant evidence / intelligence recovered.
  • Provide statements and attend court to give evidence if required.
  • To promote and comply with GMP's policies on health and safety both in the delivery of services and the treatment of others.
  • Comply with and promote equality legislation and GMP's policies on diversity and equality. Take steps to eliminate unlawful discrimination, advance equality of opportunity and foster good relations.
  • To fully participate in GMP’s development review process.

  • To comply with the requirements of GMP's policies on Drug and Alcohol testing – requirements in respect of specific posts/ roles are described in the policies which are available on the Intranet/SharePoint.
  • All staff and officers must adhere to and comply with Data Protection, Freedom of Information and Human Rights legislation and the Authorised Professional Practice (Information Management).  It is the responsibility of all staff and officers to maintain data quality and security. Therefore when inputting, updating and using GMP information, you are to ensure that it is Accurate, Adequate, Relevant and Timely (AART), and that it is used / disclosed for business purposes only and kept secure.   • Supervisors and managers have the additional responsibility of ensuring that staff undertake the appropriate training and fully understand and apply the required Force policy, procedures and information / records management standards in the course of their duties. Supervisors and managers should ensure that staff / officers understand their responsibilities in maintaining data quality and security and have appropriate processes in place to monitor compliance.
