Design Manager

We have a great role for a Design Manager to work on a design and build of a nuclear licensed facility near Reading. The scope of works for this project will include Programme Management, Construction, Building Services (M&E), Instrumentation and Control Systems and various external works.

Potential candidates for this role must be able to obtain and retain Security Clearance to be able to be considered.

The Design Manager will manage an established RIBA stage 4B design house and a main Contractor providing 4C design to ensure construction performance and delivery are maintained to achieve facility handover late 2022. In this role, the Design manager will be expected to control legacy change and new design change, to provide technical challenge, to mitigate cost and schedule impacts resulting from change, to manage technical queries and manage design interfaces between all design parties, and liaising with the construction director to ensure programme performance. The Design Manager will need to ensure that at all times the Company’s governance and any contract, Client and Regulator (ONR, DNSR, HID, EA) specific requirements are adhered to.

What will I be doing?

  • Providing management support to the Senior Design Manager and Clients design team
  • Manage the design house delivery of architectural fit out deliverables through certification and addressing technical queries.
  • Ensuring schedule risks resulting from design impact are identified to the Design Lead and Programme Director and providing mitigation measures as appropriate
  • Coordinating design interfaces and inputs between design house, Costain Construction team and 4C designers (Contractors)
  • Liaising with the client’s Assurance team and engineering managers
  • Managing design change from identification, solution development, review and delivery
  • Understanding the implications of health, safety and environmental regulations on design deliverables

Essential requirements:

  • Hold or able to attain minimum of S/C security clearance
  • UK National
  • Minimum 5 years post-graduate design, engineering or management experience in infrastructure or related industry with demonstrable track record of achievement
  • Understand of operation of EDMS and design workflows
  • Experience delivering civil, structural, and architectural design packages
  • Strong negotiating and team-working skills
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Demonstrable basic legal, contractual and construction knowledge
  • Experience in implementing and delivering strategic objectives and dealing with change
  • Confidence and ability to assert influence
  • Hold an ICE/IMechE accredited degree
  • Chartered Membership of ICE/IMechE (or working towards)

Desired:

  • Experience of working in highly regulated environments Nuclear Licenced Sites and MOD sites
  • Demonstrable knowledge of licence conditions applicable to the site:
  • LC19: Construction or Installation of New Plant
  • LC20: Modifications to Design of Plant Under Construction
  • Experience of delivery of cross discipline design packages including civil, structural, architectural, mechanical, electrical and PP&E.
  • Experience of technical management being able to understand and review design deliverables, in accordance with client’s operating procedure (OP-107) and able to demonstrate the ability to collate information and prepare reports.
  • Experience of design change management in accordance with client’s operating procedure (OP-105)
  • Experience using specific EDMS, in particular, D2 and Blue Cielo Meridian
