Network Engineer

Counter Terrorism Policing Stand: Platinum Sponsor

This role will provide Network, Security and Infrastructure technical support for the CTPHQ National Customer Services Centre (CSC) situated to the east of Birmingham. The individual will support services in the CSC portfolio, including operational and project tasks relating to the maintenance and development of the National CTP IT Services.

This role will be part of a team of engineers covering 7am to 7pm weekdays from the CSC technical ops centre and on call, approx. 1 week in 4, for critical support of the national infrastructure. Due to the nature of the systems the role is office based with occasional options for working from home. The shift structure for this role does allow for working compressed hours over a 4 day week.

Occasional travel to other UK sites will be required.

This role is vital to ensure the national infrastructure is available, secure and supported to best practice standards to enable CTP operations.        

Key Tasks

The post holder will be required to do the following:

  • Provide technical support for National infrastructure relating to Business As Usual (BAU) and Projects to ensure objectives are being met in line with CTP priorities.
  • Ensure personal workload is effectively managed, prioritised and issues are escalated to line management as necessary.
  • Ensure Adherence to required polices, standards, controls and best practice.
  • Ensure SLAs for services in the CSC Service portfolio are met.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation to ensure all services are maintained and knowledge is shared.
  • Proactively maintain and update the infrastructure to ensure security and reliability.
  • Proactively monitor environments to help prevent issues arising.
  • Ensure security procedures are followed, to comply with the relevant accreditation, procedures and/or guidance.
  • Support and mentoring of other members of the team to build a strong support service.

Essentials Experience

  • Experience in a network, security or infrastructure engineer role in a technically diverse environment.
  • Experience of network and communication technologies including routing, switching, VOIP and/or video conferencing (Cisco preferred).
  • Experience of routing protocols.
  • Experience of security and/or firewall devices.
  • Ability to prioritise, execute tasks and achieve results in a busy service operations environment
  • Full UK driving license required


  • Experience of network and infrastructure monitoring and automation tools.
  • Experience of converged infrastructure / network virtualisation.
  • Experience of network design and documentation.
  • Experience of load balancer technologies.
  • Experience of network hardening and security best practice.
  • Experience of PKI and encryption technologies.
  • Experience of ITIL change management.
  • Experience of failover testing, resilience and redundancy methodology.
  • Experience of working within a ITIL service environment working to defined metrics and SLAs.
  • Operational knowledge and experience of working with service desk call management systems.
  • Preferred Cisco CCNA or equivalent qualified.
  • Preferred ITIL V4 Foundation certified.
