Job summary

As Dstl’s first line of management, your primary purpose as a Team Leader (TL) is to provide leadership to the people in your team. This has a balance of leading / managing people and technical leadership, ensuring the development and delivery of capability to meet current and future demand.

 A Team Leader may also fulfil other roles as part of their technical contribution but not to the detriment of their line management responsibilities.

 The successful candidate will be expected to participate in delivery of projects, project technical leadership, coaching and mentoring staff. 

The Platform Systems Division of Dstl supports the Ministry of Defence and wider government in a broad range of ground breaking technical research areas. We respond to current and future demands ensuring that the UK retains a battle-winning advantage.

 We are recruiting Team Leaders for the following teams:

The Air Enablers Team is part of the Air and Maritime Environment Group within Platform Systems Division and are based at Portsdown West. The team is comprised of operational analysts who use a range of analytical techniques, including modelling and simulation, and have deep Air domain knowledge. The team primarily provide analysis, advice and support to decision makers on current and future tasks (including: C2; Survivability; Air Mobility; and Operational Logistics) on a platform and system level.

 The Combat Support Analysis Team is part of the Land Analysis Group within Platform Systems Division and are based at Portsdown West. The team provides domain area expertise and systems analysis support across the whole Combat Support spectrum, This covers Military Engineering and Land Indirect Fires.

 The Close Combat Analysis Team is part of the Land Analysis Group within Platform Systems Division and are based at Portsdown West. The team provides domain area expertise and systems analysis support across the whole Close Combat domain spectrum.  This covers dismounted soldier systems including body armour and PPE, weapons, C2 and the adversary threat and mounted systems.

 The Air Systems Autonomy Team is part of the brand new Autonomous Systems Group within Platform Systems Division at Portsdown West. Created to bring together and develop this new, exciting and fast-paced capability within Dstl, the team works across the S&T enterprise, both nationally and internationally, to spring-board the best airbourne autonomous systems into the hands of defence and security.

The Aerospace Sciences Team is part of the Aerospace Systems Group (AeSG) within the Platform Systems Division at Portsdown West. The team’s core capabilities are in the Aerodynamics, Flight Dynamics & Control, and Structures flight sciences disciplines; the team’s purpose is to provide high-quality technical leadership, effective collaboration, innovative ideas  and solutions, advice, and guidance, in these disciplines. This includes internal technical work, trials/testing using UK and International facilities, and external work conducted in industry, academia, and through International Research Collaboration (IRC).

The  Air & Space Warfare Centre Team (ASWC Team), part of the Aerospace Systems Group (AeSG) are primarily based within the Air and Space Warfare Centre HQ at RAF Waddington, and also have members at other UK sites and abroad. Operating as part of the Operational Analysis Element (OAE) within the ASWC, the team works directly with military personnel providing authoritative scientific expertise to ensure evidence based decisions and outcomes across a wide range of air requirements. The team has an immediate and high-profile impact on operations playing a tangible role in ongoing technical development, future procurement, and future S&T focus areas. The TL for this team is not required to relocate permanently to be co-located with the team, but will need to make regular in-person visits.

Job description

In this role you will:

  • Develop & sustain capability (people relationships, infrastructure, knowledge, licences to practice) to provide technical/scientific contribution to current and future projects across Dstl through effective use of the Team's resources/expertise:

o   Maintain awareness of current and future demand requirements

o   Understand and use the different resource options to ensure an appropriate mix of team members

o   Understand and effectively develop capability to align with Division Capability plans

o   Build resilience through succession planning, including developing future leaders

  • Direct Line management of a team of ca.15 Team Members:

o   Enable effective performance management and development of team members

o   Allocate employees to tasks or projects based on requirements

o   Coach and support Team Members career and personal development.

  • Ensure that people have the necessary skills and competencies for the tasks assigned
  • Ensure employees have knowledge of and conform to all safety and security and resilience requirements.
  • Build employees engagement and create an environment which nurtures excellence through:

o   setting the direction for team, including how the team fits with strategic aims;

o   creating a positive and inclusive working environment that aligns with Dstl Values, champions diversity and enables employees to excel

o   communicating and owning difficult mesages;

o   challenging and addressing poor performance

o   recognising and highlighting high performance

o   networking with other Team Leaders and stakeholders to share good practice and ensure a coherent approach

  • Implement Dstl's policies and ensure compliance with the Management System.
  • Provide individual technical/professional contribution as agreed with Line Manager.
  • Recommending:

o   Allocation of employees to all leadership roles on projects (PM, PTA, LTR)

o   Appointment of Capability Advisers to a programme
